Australian skipper Steve Waugh met Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh yesterday and offered to invest in setting up a cricket city in or around Mumbai.
He also showed interest in building a residential township through investments from Macquarie Bank in Australia, for which he is brand ambassador.
Deshmukh agreed to offer him space — BDD chawls in the heart of the city, surplus mill land or the land reserved for amusement park near Gorai.
Waugh, who famously complained about Sourav Ganguly’s late arrival for a toss in the 2001 series, did not seem to mind the CM coming 45 minutes late.
Waugh was accompanied by other bank officials who explained the plans to Deshmukh, Industries Minister Ashok Chavan, secretaries V K Jairath, Ramarao and Ramanand Tiwari.
Waugh did not elaborate on the approximate amount his bank would invest in the city.
