It used to be chemistry between the actors for the success of a film, now it seems the chemistry is between the director and the actor. We are talking about Harry Baweja and Ajay Devgan who have given number of hits together. Ajay changed his look in the blockbuster QAYAMAT with the long hairdo as a prisoner. In MAIN AISA HI HOON, he is playing a gent with a much younger brain. Also a one of its kind of a role where Ajay will not be seen smoking on screen. Surely, a character worth seeing. Earlier, Salman Khan played a similar character of an adult with a brain of a child in CHANDRAMUKHI with Sridevi, which did not fare too well at the box office.

MAIN AISA HI HOON is a story about Indraneel Thakur, or Neel (Ajay Devgan) as he's fondly known by the townspeople is a grown-up man with the brain of a seven-year-old child. Heart-breakingly innocent, kind and with a generosity of spirit that few can rival, Neel is the darling of the small town he lives in. Life, for him, is a fable and the world a fairy-tale setting where no wrong or no evil can ever penetrate. The nucleus of his world is his seven-year-old daughter, Gungun, whom he loves beyond explanation. Friends, the owner of the books and coffee shop he works in and his landlady form the rest of his world.

Gungun's mother, Maya Trivedi (Esha Deol) had entered Neel's life like a mysterious breeze and left just as inexplicably, after giving birth to the child. And for the seven years after that, Neel and Gungun just had each other to live for. Their world was happy, albeit not picture-perfect. But none of their troubles were so large that they couldn't be surmounted by Neel's simple and fabulously sensible approach.

In this idyllic world, on the eve of Gungun's seventh birthday entered a storm - in the form of Maya's father - Dayanath Trivedi (Anupam Kher). The old man who's just learned about the presence of Gungun had flown down from London to claim his granddaughter. The first meeting between Neel and Trivedi doesn't go too well, and Trivedi slaps a lawsuit on Neel - for custody of the little child.

Neel can feel his world shattering around him and his decision to search for the best lawyer in town lands him at the office of Neeti Khanna Sushmita Sen). Recently divorced, embittered, terribly ambitious, with a son whom she inadvertently de-priorities to the point of neglect, Neeti is a far cry from the role model for Neel's case. At first terribly resistant to take up Neel's case, she finally is broken down by Neel's sincerity and his unflinching love for his little daughter. To her great surprise, Neeti finds herself learning many lessons from Neel, and decides to take up his case.

Fighting a powerful NRI with all the clout and money and the consequent power wasn't the only stumble in Neeti's path. Trivedi had the advantage of being in the right - Neel was a mentally handicapped person with the ominous responsibility of bringing up a little girl. While Trivedi had every material arsenal that would help him bring up the child - including wealth and a sharp intellectual mind - as against Neel's seven-year-old brain. The courtroom battle to convince the judge otherwise forms the crux of the story.

Apart from its moot message - love is all you need - the film deals with several other issues. Maya's drifting, confused and lost state of mind - constantly seeking love and acceptance is a mirror of a large section of the youth, deprived of parental attention. Neeti's hardened exterior, her disillusionment with life as a single mother and her inability to give any attention to her child who suffers due to her single-minded ambition finds its reflection in many urban lives... And in Trivedi, one can see the quintessential success story - at the cost of his estranged daughter.

Viewing the complex world with the simplicity of Neel's mind, this is a beautiful tale of a father and daughter - and all the lives they touch. This is a story about love.

One will have to wait until 6th of May when the movie releases to see whether or not the powerful Dayanath Trivedi with all the clout and movey, wins his granddaughter from the loving father Neel.

Are you trying to prove a point with a film like Main Aisa Hi Hoon?
Why would I want to prove a point? Nobody has turned around and said I can’t play anything. Harry (Baweja) had two or three scripts and he approached me with them. I heard MAHH and I loved it, so we went ahead and did it.

Tell us about your character.
I play Neil, a mentally challenged person who has the brain of a seven-year-old child. I was conscious about overplaying this character. We had to strike the right balance so I couldn’t underplay it either.

When you attempt something new, there is always that fear that it may be too difficult. So I interacted with a few special people and saw how they behaved. Sometimes realism doesn’t work.

Honestly, before the first shot I didn’t know how I was going to play this character. Everybody around me was tense. The only homework I did was working out. I tried to think of how this character would walk and while walking on the treadmill I tried walk like him.

What were the physical characteristics you changed for the character?
Putting on weight was necessary because the character had to look vulnerable, sweet, and bubbly.

So I had to cut down the intensity. Even Kajol told me that my looks would go against the character. Putting on weight is so easy, you have to sit, eat and drink.

During the shooting of the film I did just that. I have used my hands to express a lot in this film.

There is a clap that has been used to express different emotions. When Neil is happy, he claps. He also claps when he is upset.

The most loveable trait about Neil?
I get lazy when characters are easy to play. This one kept me on my toes. No one can say that I took the character lightly. He’s very honest and childlike, so there is no manipulation.

As the caption says, he’s a normal man in an abnormal world only because he doesn’t know anything about the materialistic world. He doesn’t plan or plot, he’s straightforward and believes in love.

Your favorite moments in the film?
They are very nice moments that question parenthood. Like my character can give his daughter love but do the other parents give that kind of attention and time to their children? Also, when Neil is asked to lie, he doesn’t because he doesn’t because he has been told that lying is bad.

Who is more normal — Ajay Devgan or Neil?
Nobody is normal in this world. You have your abnormalities and I have mine. It depends on what your priorities in life are.

So nobody can be good for everybody. Everybody is abnormal in some way or the other. So why say that special people are not normal because we think we are normal.

Did you break down in any scene while shooting?
There is a scene where I break down in front of Sush. She is my lawyer and she asks me to lie in court and Neil doesn’t understand how to manipulate the truth and he breaks down. I was so involved in that scene that I actually cried.

It happens to every actor if he is playing a character very closely. After the shot is over, the emotion lingers on because you reach an emotional peak so it takes five or ten minutes to settle down.

Are you getting complacent with all the awards and accolades?
Maybe. Maybe not. Or maybe expectations have gone so high that I haven’t been able to measure up. If I’m not terribly excited about a role, I take it easy and that’s my fault.

People’s expectations are high so they get disappointed when they are not lived up to. It takes me a shot or two to settle down.

With every film, I’m a little nervous while doing the first shot because I never know exactly what I am going to do till I hit the right note.

That happened in Company too. I still get embarrassed and feel I could have done better in my past films, including the films I have won National awards for. Expectations are a burden to bear and I have to cope up with them. It’s scary.
