Styling those locks

HAIR DRESSING industry is a huge growth area all over the world. As with clothes, hair styles change with fashion. And with more and more people taking an interest in the way they look, the hair dressing industry will be as popular as ever for a long time to come.
People are now realising that it's not their clothes, shoes and jewellery which describes their persona, it is also their hair. This is the reason why they are getting more experimental and are open to change.
Did you think that hairstyling or cutting was for barbers and the likes? But that's not true! Today, hair cutting can mean a high-profile career which translates into mega bucks, and a passport into the world of the rich and glamorous.
A hair stylist can go by the number of international players. With most women wanting much more than just a trim today, an up market and qualified hairstylist is being treated on a par with fashion designers, commanding big money and high-flying clientele.
Not content with a mere trim, women these days are turning adventurous. And what quicker way to transform the way you look than sporting a new zippy hairstyle?
No longer is perming, straightening, colouring, tinting, bleaching, conditioning or volumising, purely a women's thing. Men are increasingly going for the whole works — and are equally game to experiment and have fun with hair.
Being a hairstylist is not all glamour. It calls for hard work and precision. You have to stand on your feet for long hours, establish good communication with your client (creating a feeling of mutual trust). Make sure you're not asthmatic or allergic to ammonia fumes though.
The starting point is a certification from a professional school of hairstyling. To get a hang of the basics. You also need to keep up with the latest international trends — continuously studying international magazines, learning new techniques, watching televisions and the browsing the Net.
You have to focus on the complete look — keeping in mind the person's age, personality and lifestyle. Starting out as a shampooist, you go on to become a junior hairstylist and finally a senior hairstylist, adding specialisations as you go along.

Eligibility and Attributes

One needs a basic ability to read and write. However, a 10+2 would be the best. As the training has become specialised, there is no denying the fact that knowledge in different streams is required to become successful in this career as in other careers. A person should be creative, should have an eye for details, an open mind, willing to learn every time, and should have confidence in his or her abilities.
One cannot be successful if a person does not have a discerning ability, as the profession demands quick judgment on what a customer requires or what suits him or her best.

Professional Schools for Hairstyling

You can do short courses with the following professional schools which are recognised world-wide. Depending on your abilities you can get a good job once you have completed courses from these professional schools. These are some of the good and recognised professional hairstyling schools. Vidal Sassoon Academy has centres in UK, US, China, Germany and Canada. L'Oreal Institute, Paris with centres in US and Japan has opened an International Hairdressing Academy in Malaysia, Mumbai, Chennai and Dubai. Keune Technical Centre in Holland and Nalini (Nalini and Yasmin) in technical collaboration with Wella have recently started a hairdressing academy in Mumbai.

Future Prospects

After you've gained some experience and a reputation at a good parlour, you can start your own salon. If you are good, your reputation will spread fast and wide and you can expect quick and fast returns. So when you make up your mind that you really want to take up this profession, understand a few things
·1) It involves dealing with people.
·2) It is an important part of the fashion industry and involves using your creativity and imagination.
·3) You need to have communication skills in order to talk to clients and build up a good relationship, have a friendly manner and good listening skills.
·4) It is a physically demanding job, requiring you to spend long hours on your feet. So if you have tired legs don't think of it.
·5) You need to update your knowledge and skills regularly.
