We invited avid cricket fan Balakrishna Parab, a marketing executive, to our office to watch the fourth one-dayer between India and Pakistan yesterday.

While Parab watched the match, Dr Satyesh Kumar Vishindasani, an intern from KEM Hospital, kept a close eye on his blood pressure.

He found that Parab’s blood pressure increased well beyond normal levels at crucial points during the match.

10.10 am
The match has just begun. Dr Vishindasani finds Parab’s blood pressure is a ‘high-normal’ 130/90, probably because he is a little anxious.

Doctor’s diagnosis

Doctor Satyesh Kumar Vishindasani said, “In the beginning, Parab was anxious, which is why his blood pressure was high-normal. But after some time, it settled down. It increased occasionally, specially during run-out appeals, catches and sixes. In the final over of both innings, it was well above the normal level. However, there is nothing wrong with this, as the blood pressure increased only for a brief period. Only if it remains above 140/90 for a while it is considered hypertension.”

‘I can skip meals to watch a game’

Parab said after the match, “I watch all of India’s matches and can skip meals to catch a game. But I do not watch them as intensely as I used to four or five years ago. After the match-fixing scandal, I lost a bit of interest. However, today’s match was a real cracker. I was really tense during the last over of the match. India fought back well, but Pakistan held their nerve better and won.”
