MUMBAI: Bollywood diva Aishwarya Rai's curt statement against former boyfriend Salman Khan was prompted by close friends, among them Vivek Oberoi.

It was a great deal of thought and persuasion from these friends that made Aishwarya -- now recuperating in a hospital here for an injury during shooting -- release a press statement expressing her disgust about Salman.

Industry sources say one of those who prevailed on her to break her silence about Salman's alleged misbehaviour was actor Vivek Oberoi. They say Aishwarya could not take it any more when there were reports that she might star with Salman in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next film Bajirao Mastani .

"After all the unsavoury insinuations and innuendos that have been making the rounds in the past week, she couldn't even contemplate a film with Salman Khan," a close friend of the actress said. "The thought that people could actually discuss the possibility of her doing a film with him appalled and horrified Aishwarya. That's when she broke her silence."

It's true that Bhansali wanted to cast Salman and Aishwarya together again in the historical epic Bajirao Mastani after the phenomenal success of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam which co-starred the two.

But Aishwarya in her press statement Sunday said: "For the sake of my well-being, sanity, my dignity and self-respect of my family, I will not work with Salman Khan anymore.I maintained a dignified silence but he attacked the dignity of me and my family with irresponsible rumour-mongering. I stood by him, enduring alcoholism, misbehaviour, and in turn I was at the receiving end of abuse, infidelity and indignity."

She made it clear that she was in no mood to oblige for the sake of a role, no matter how tempting. "I can't imagine why Sanjay Bhansali would want to bring the two together? Wouldn't a razor have been a far cheaper means of committing suicide?" a friend wondered.

But the persuasion continued. On the day of the accident on location for Raj Kumar Santoshi's Khaki in Nashik, Bhansali was there to make one more attempt to persuade Aishwarya to fulfill his celluloid dream.

A team representing the James Bond set-up was also in Nashik on the same day to offer Aishwarya a role. But neither Bhansali nor the James Bond team could meet the actress, as she was rushed to Mumbai after the accident in which a car being used for shooting hit her chair, throwing her into a cactus bush.

Vivek Oberoi, who made a similar outburst against Salman only days ago saying the latter had threatened to kill him over his links with Aishwarya, has been by the side of the actress ever since. "I'd do the same for any of my co-stars. When Rani Mukherjee was in distress I was with her. I'm doing the same for Aishwarya. That doesn't mean I'm involved with either of them," Vivek asserts.

Salman, who is in London, however, refused to react even after Aishwarya's statement."Let her say what she wants. Let her be the hero. I've nothing to say. From the time I came into the industry I've been besieged by problems."It's sad, but it's okay. What goes around comes around. I've just completed a concert in Holland and I'm back in London shooting. People say I've run away to London. Run away from what? And where? My passport has to be taken from the Bandra police station before I leave."

Salman's trip to London was delayed by four days because of a case in the Jodhpur courts in which he stands accused of illegally shooting blackbucks is still pending.

He will return to Mumbai on April 9. He has also been accused of killing a man in a road accident, besides allegations of assaulting Aishwarya.

about beating ash, i still think it was aish's mom who gave the beating, she apperently gave aish hell when she was dating salman cause she was opposed to a hindu/muslim thing. so i wouldn't be surprised if she's the one who gave ash the black eye, cause salman's had his fair share of known gfs, especially models, none of the rest ever had any bruises or even complained about abuse, they complained about his flings with girls, but not abuse.

Salman Khan had a sweet surprise for his co-star Priyanka Chopra on her birthday on 18th of July.
Co-incidentally, July 18 was also the last day of shooting for David Dhawan's Mujhse Shaadi Karogi starring Salman, Priyanka and Akshay Kumar .
That day Salman came to the shoot and acted as if he was unaware of Priyanka's b'day. As usual, he kept on cracking his wacky humor on sets and made everybody laugh.
A few moments later Salman and producer Sajid Nadiadwala brought a cake and surprised the Chopra girl.
As Salman was in a real jocular mood he actually did the countdown to the cutting of the cake from sixty to one with the seriousness of the countdown of a space shuttle launch. And in less than a few seconds after the birthday girl cut the cake everybody had his mouth full.
