Movie Preview for Omkara:
The film is Vishal Bharadwaj's interpretation of the bard's classic, Othello. A play that has been made four times in Hollywood but is being brought to life for the first time in a mainstream Hindi film in a commercial format. Like Hollywood legendary filmmaker, Orson Wells, Vishal Bharadwaj is fascinated with Shakespearan drama - one of Vishal's finest works remains his interpretation of Shakespeare's Macbeth - Maqbool. Omkara in spirit stays true to the central theme of Othello and ends up humanizing Shakespeare's characters with the necessary folklore and ethnic charm that is required for a contemporary story setting.
Set against the Indian milieu of political warfare in the interiors of Uttar Pradesh, the film follows one man's descent into sexual jealousy because of his passionate love for his woman and the final destruction of that love at the altar of blind obsession. Love is blind but the flip side of love is jealousy and that can tear apart the strongest and bravest of warriors - in this case Omkara.
Omkara or Omi (Ajay Devgan) is a gifted chieftain who heads a gang of outlaws, which include the crafty Langda Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan) and the dynamic Kesu (Vivek Oberoi) amongst his chief cohorts. The story begins when Omi appoints Kesu and not Langda as his chief lieutenant. Langda's pride is slighted and raging with envy he hatches a plot to falsely implicate Omi's beautiful lover Dolly (Kareena Kapoor), in a love affair with Omi's “favorite lieutenant”, Kesu. With the unwitting aid of Indu (Konkana Sen Sharma), Langda's wife, and the willing help of Raju, a fellow grouch, Langda's plan takes shape and results in horrific tragedy. Using petty insinuations and lies, Langda keeps poisoning Omi's mind till one day it snaps and Omi goes about tearing up his own safe and secure world. By the time he realizes what he has done and the backlash of his actions it is too late…
But like all love stories which never really end…out of the ashes of this one too comes a twist. Omkara's dark issak or love for Dolly, Dolly's unquestioning issak for Omi, Langda's warped loyalty and jealousy for Omi, the vibrant Kesu's unswerving devotion to Omi - all leading up to a dark tragedy where Omi finally realizes what he has done…

No Ash, but Vivek’s life is full of music!
When director Vishal Bhardwaj told Vivek Oberoi that he would have to actually strum the guitar for his role in 'Omkara', the lad took on the challenge like he was born to be a guitarist. Everybody close to Vivek, even ex-girlfriend Aishwarya knows he has a natural ear of music. However, co-star Saif Ali Khan, who wooed audiences at a performance in Delhi where he played the guitar like a true rock star himself, even helped Vivek to learn how to pull the right strings. We won't be surprised to hear the lad crooning very soon too. So, Ash may not be in his life, but Vivek's life is full of song and music.

"Omkara' crewmembers were scared out of their wits when Viveik Oberoi played an elaborate prank on them at a picnic spot on the outskirts of Mumbai.
Viveik recalled the incident with glee: "Once, after shooting till late, we got a break the next day. So, I took a few people from the crew whom I had become friends with to a small picnic spot, Kates Point, in Mahabaleshwar.
"It was way past midnight. I had got drinks and food for them. We were all singing and dancing when somebody asked what place I had got them to.
"I told them it was the place where Kate, a 'phirangi' girl, had committed suicide during British rule. After her death the point was named after her... Everyone became silent. Suddenly there were those eerie sounds around. I told them that was her 'makbara', (actually, a view point built by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation Ltd).
"I told them everyone who comes here has to pray for her soul's peace and make some offerings. I could see all of them offering wine and beer and strawberries... it was so hilarious... it took them two days to realise that it was a joke."

Cannes, May 21 (IANS) From the unbridled buffoonery of the laboured "Pyaare Mohan" to the intensely solemn narrative ambience of Vishal Bhardwaj's upcoming "Omkara", an adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Othello", actor Viveik Oberoi has shifted gears in the hope of giving his somewhat stagnant career a bit of a fillip.
"Like any other kid in India, I grew up on a staple diet of Shakespeare," said the nattily attired Viveik in the course of a brief chat on a boat anchored in the Cannes quay.
"I even performed a few of his classic plays in school," he added.
So was Shakespeare's "Othello" tucked away somewhere at the back of his mind when he got down to essaying the role of Kesu, modelled on Casio, in "Omkara"?
"No, not really, I did not want to be too influenced by Shakespeare. I wanted to be free to add a dimension to it. This after all is Kesu's story, not Casio's," he explained.
"I see 'Omkara' as Vishal Bhardwaj's interpretation, and not an exact replica of the Shakespeare play. It is on the basis of that understanding that I approached my role in the film," he added.
"Omkara" is scheduled for commercial release on July 28 although the director appears to be just as keen to have the film premiered in a major international film festival.
"It was an absolute privilege to be a part, however small, of this project. It is a film and a role that I am really proud of. It could not have happened without Vishal's unique vision," said Viveik.
The actor will be back in a more mainstream Bollywood terrain in his next release, "Naksha", directed by first-timer Sachin Bajaj.
"It is an action-adventure flick... a sort of Manmohan-Desai-meets-India-Jones affair," said Viveik who also has Sajid Nadiadwala's "Fool and Final" in his kitty.
Viveik's previous attempt at being different in Sujoy Ghosh's "Home Delivery" did not exactly hit home.
"Omkara", by the look of it, has the potential of becoming the new mantra not just for Viveik, but also for all the other actors in the film.

Vivek Oberoi made more than extra efforts to lend perfection to his role in the forthcoming film Omkara , which is inspired by William Shakespeare’s Othello.
Vivek plays the dynamic Kesu – one of the chief cohorts of Omkara – played by Ajay Devgan .
On Vivek’s effort to get under the skin of his character Director Vishal Bhardwaj wrote in his book based on the play: “Vivek surrendered himself to the script and surprised me with his diligence…For one sequence, he had to play the guitar and sing. He practiced non-stop for a month and on the day of the shoot, blew everyone with his performance. It’s turned out to be one of the best scenes in the film.”
In the film, there is a sequence where Vivek's character strums the guitar and the actor wanted to get under the skin of character thoroughly and started taking guitar lessons. His musician friend used to travel all the way to Wai, near Mahabaleshwar, to teach him to play the stringed instrument.
"Vivek is a very dedicated actor. He started learning to play the guitar only to get into character for the sequence in the film. He has done a fabulous job in 'Omkara'," said Bhardwaj who is quite impressed with Vivek's sincerity towards his work.
Vivek returns the compliment by saying: "I would rather let my work speak for itself. I am looking forward to 'Omkara'. Vishal Bhardwaj has an excellent vision."
'Omkara' also stars Kareena Kapoor , Saif Ali Khan , Naseeruddin Shah , Konkana Sen and Bipasha Basu in a special appearance.
'Omkara' is slated to release on July 28 along with Anthony Kaun Hai .

u used to die for him!!!!!
For those of you keeping track, you already know from what we've told you, that Viveik plays Cassio (of 'Othello') alias Keshav Firangi (of 'Omkara'). You also know that he learned to play the guitar for the film.
But did you know that initially, he refused the role because he didn't consider himself apt for Keshav's character? Were you aware that he did his first item number - 'Bidi Jalaike', and that he and Bipasha have a steamy lovemaking scene in the film? For anyone who didn't know these facts, you now have some food for thought.
A little stiff from the gym but easily loosened up by talk of Omkara, Viveik Oberoi sips his green tea and offers an insight into the film, his character and his person.
The actor has profound things to say about his new film. Lying back on a couch with a Buddha painted by his sister behind him, Viveik talks of his character Kesu Firangi.
"Omkara gave me the gift of Kesu Phirangi. It was a very exciting role with so many interesting dynamics to it. And for an actor, there isn't a more beautiful gift than that. Just an attempt, a crack, a shot at performing such a role, in itself is an actor's best bet. I'm very thankful."
And what was it about Kesu that appealed to Viveik? "Kesu Firangi is the only guy in that rural setting who can speak English. He even listens to English pop music. There are instances when he's trying to woo his lady with the typical English accent and then again, he shifts to his 'teth bhaashaa'. On one hand, he is the do-or-die loyalist for Omi bhaiya and on the other side, there's this lighter romantic side to him. He's the guitar-strumming, flirtatious and even vulnerable ladies man. The duality in the character was most exciting to me."
Everyone knows Viveik's story of how he got his debut role in Company, role-playing as Chandu in Ram Gopal Varma's office. So what did he do to play Kesu? Viveik gives full credit to his director Vishal Bhardwaj. "I had the advantage of working with someone like Vishal. The more hungry you are as an actor, the more he feeds you." Is he being modest? "I don't need to prepare for a role. I'm a natural!" he jokes.
Viveik lets out a little secret of his hot Omkara costar, who plays the dancer Billo Chaman Bahar. "She's petrified of getting on to the giant wheel. There was a scene when Kesu and Billo go up on a giant wheel and Bonny was frozen up there, her eyes shut tight and holding on to everything around for dear life. It was adorable. She's an absolute child."
The actor also struck up with Saif Ali Khan for the first time, learning tips on strumming the guitar. Even now, the boys refuse to get out their characters. "When I meet Saif in the gym, I address him as Langda bhaiya and he responds, 'Bol Kesu!'"
In contrast, Viveik and Kareena Kapoor grooved in Yuva and it's his fifth film with Ajay Devgan — Company, Masti, Yuva, Kaal and now Omkara. "Kareena's a breath of fresh air, an injection of energy. I think there's a very sweet chemistry that comes across on screen. There's no doubt that Ajay is one of the most talented actors we have. He is effortless with his work. He's a brother. He's been there for me."
It's the second time that Viveik will play Ajay Devgan's second-in-command — first Company, then Omkara.
He may be second but the actor tells Sunday Mid Day all the firsts in his life
First person I idolized My dad
First crush My English teacher in third grade, I think. She used to wear salwar kurta and a big bindi. She had the softest voice ever.
First act of charity Giving my answer paper to someone in school.
First brawl I was in 9th grade in Mayo College. We were a bunch of friends and there used to be this rickshaw stand in town. I remember some rickshawala said something to a friend of mine or he pushed him. We had a huge fight there, like the filmi "Tu ne mere dost ko haath kaise lagaya?" thing happened. I remember it had become quite a story.
First suit he wore I was around eight years old and it was on my chacha's wedding. And I remember that I wanted to wear a tie. But all the kids were wearing bows, so I was also made to wear one. And when I reached the wedding, I saw all the waiters also in bow ties, I threw mine off for the rest of the evening!
First car I like things that are rugged. I was 20 I think, when I got my first car, a CJ 340 short suspension jeep with an open top that remained open in any circumstances. Even if it rained and I was taking a girl out in my car, "Sorry but you'd have to get drenched."
First job I've worked a lot on sets. From making and serving tea and coffee to loading and unloading trucks.
First paycheck I worked as a dubbing artist. That was how I really earned for the first time. I've dubbed for soaps like The Bold and Beautiful, Santa Barbara and films like Babe and Independence Day.

Bipasha finds Viveik sweet!
Indiatimes
Here's one actor who will be proud of himself after he hears this. Apparently, Bipasha, who has been paired opposite Viveik Oberoi in Omkara finds the latter 'very sweet'. "Vivek is very sweet, enthusiastic, and very much into his work," Bips says about the actor. "I have seen Sathiya and I liked him in it. He is very energetic, very friendly and co-operative. I had no difficult moment with him." Of course, the good vibes are mutual - for Viveik says, "Bips is the most sexy and gorgeous actress. She has a sultry sensuality. She came and dazzled everyone with Bidi jalai le... (her song in the film). She's a very cool and chilled out person..." Now is this a mutual admiration society or what?

Vivek Oberoi goes on a shopping spree, buys Rs 40,000 shirt
Ram Kamal Mukherjee, Mumbai Mirror
Guess who our source spotted indulging in a shopping spree recently? Well, it was Vivek Oberoi who was shopping for himself. “Vivek has changed a lot. Now, he has become very conscious about his looks. He is constantly in touch with his designer Arjun Khanna and he is trying out different types of looks in his forthcoming films,” says our source.
While in London to attend the BAFTA Bollywood weekend, Vivek was seen buying an Armani shirt, worth Rs 40,000, among several other things. Apparently, Vivek even called Arjun from London to take help in making his choices.
When contacted, Vivek Oberoi said, “Yes, I had a blast in London. I was there to attend the BAFTA weekend. I have been partying a lot and enjoying my single status.” When asked about his shopping spree, he seemed surprised.
“Who told you about my shirt? Yes, I shopped a lot because London is a place where I find my kind of stuff and enough time to look for what suits me best,” he replied.
Why did he need to consult Arjun Khanna? “I am extremely happy with the kind of outfits Arjun designs for me. I am very fond of his Rockstar collection. Even his Maharaja Line is awesome,” he says.
“The best part is that Arjun understands me and I feel at ease while wearing his designer collections,” says Vivek. Incidentally, Vivek's association with Arjun Khanna started when he designed for Vivek's wardrobe at the Cannes Film Festival.

‘I just can’t make the first move’
...says Viveik Oberoi. So, is there a love story behind that mysterious grin?
AFSANA AHMED Times News Network
For the past few years, life has been topsy-turvy for Viveik Oberoi. Now finally, things are back on track. The actor is being talked about for his work rather than his personal life. “It’s a welcome change, man!” he sighs. “Somewhere along the way, I had forgotten what my true passion was. I became a drifter and when you forget yourself, the world too forgets you. I was imbalanced and have only myself to blame.”
As he talks, his face lights up with a smile, and eyes twinkle. Viveik says it’s got nothing to do with love. “There are no complications today. Hey guys out there, the key to happiness is to stay single, as long as you can,” he laughs.
Just back from London, Viveik says he had the best time of his life there. “I walked through London’s Hyde park all by myself, sat down in its solitude and wrote poetry, contemplated and watched life go by,” he says.
So far the actor has written about a 1,000 poems on love, and life, some dark and some romantic. “I write for myself. I am a very romantic guy. Everybody says I must publish them. Let’s see,” he says. Though unlucky in love, Viveik continues to be the hardcore romantic. “Each of us goes through sad and happy experiences. But that doesn’t change your core being. For me, it’s going to take that ‘magic’ to fall in love. But the girl has to do most of what has to be done! It should be so strong that it should knock me off before I know it,” he smiles bashfully. So, is Viveik open to love again? “In life, love always happens... na na karte, pyar... You never know,” he winks adding, “I fell in love when I was 13. It took me three years to hold her hand. It was puppy love, but I lost her to cancer when she was 19. I was off relationships for a long time. She was my true love,” he recalls.
Now that he is single, is Viveik similar to the flirtatious character he’s playing in his upcoming film? “No, I am just the opposite in real life. I am told I am charming, I enjoy female attention, but I’m a very shy guy. I like the company of pretty girls but I cannot intentionally sweep a girl off her feet. If any girl is waiting for me to make the first move, she’ll have to wait life long. All my life, it’s been the other way round. I just can’t make the first move,” he blushes.
Touch the subject of women and Viveik
blushes more. “I don’t know how my girl’s going to be. She can be from any religion. My grand mother, a Sikhni married a Hindu. For me, religion is not an issue,” he says summing it up that the five women who touched his life so far were his paternal and maternal grandmothers, his mother, sister and of course, his first love Mamta.

Bollywood Trade News Network
Vivek was recently in London to attend The Asian Lifestyle 2006 at the London Olympia with Preity Zinta, Lara Dutta, and Arjun Rampal. The opening day had a fashion show which had the best 8 designers in London showcasing their designs. Apart from the Interviews to the media, Vivek interacted with his fans and signed autographs. He went a step ahead and jumped inside the enclosure to meet his fans. On popular demand Vivek was sporting enough to do an impromptu dance from one of his film. His fans just lapped it up.

Viveik Oberoi is in high spirits now. He’s kicked about his character, Kesu Firangi, in Omkara. He goes into raptures when asked to describe Kesu. From the sound of it, Kesu comes very close to the real life Viveik Oberoi. Viveik laughs, “Kesu is a complete charmer, a flirt and can joke with women. I only joke with girls I know. I’m a very shy person.” The other reason he’s excited about Omkara is the fact that it’s his fifth film with Ajay Devgan. “Whenever Ajay and I do a film together, we have a hit. I really look up to Ajay!”, he smiles.
Another film with Ajay Devgan!
(Laughs) I’d like to begin by thanking Vishalbhai, as I fondly refer to Vishal Bhardwaj, (smiles) for gifting me the role of Kesu Firangi in Omkaara. Whenever Ajay and I work together, we have hits. Company, Yuva, Masti, Kaal, and now Omkara. In my career spanning four years, I’ve done one film every year with Ajay. He’s a really nice guy. In a world where a lot of things seem something, but aren’t, Ajay is real. He’s been there for me personally and professionally ever since Company. Me looking up to him as ‘Omi bhaiyya’ in ‘Omkara’, is not acting for me. He’s really like a big brother to me. I really look up to him.
Can you recall any fond memory of shooting with Ajay?
My fondest memory of Ajay is watching him playing pranks on people on the sets. He’s a master prankster. That’s one of the reasons why I love him, as long as I’m not at the receiving end (laughs). But my most touching memory is the first day of the shoot of Company. I was just there as a newcomer, all ready with my lines but feeling slightly lost. He put his arm on my shoulder and said, ‘don’t worry, you’re doing good!’. That was so reassuring. Ajay is technically sound when it comes to films. He can write a book on films.
Besides learning to play the guitar, what other preparations did you do for Kesu Firangi’s role?
I was just getting into the character; adopting the language, the nuances and attitude of Kesu. Vishalbhai’s team of ADs was really superb. Besides, I had a genius of a writer-director. I’m a very passionate actor. When I see someone as passionate as me, I want to give my 100% and squeeze myself to give more.
How did this character fall into your lap
Four years back Ajay Devgan had recommended me to Vishalbhai when we were shooting Company. It was for a film called Barf opposite Sushmita Sen. That film never happened. Recently Ajay called me up and told me, ‘you’re doing this film’. That’s how Omkara happened. Ajay is like a big brother to me.
Were you kicked about playing Kesu Firangi?
I love Shakespeare and have read Othello but didn’t think much of Casio. I found him a very flaky character. So when I heard that I’d be doing Casio’s role, I told him that I found him a very boring character. He told me that he wasn’t offering me Casio but Kesu Firangi’s character (smiles). I listened to his adaptation of Othello and there were tears in my eyes. I hugged him and said, ‘when do we start shooting?’. His adaptation is so good. There’s an Indian perspective to it and he’s made it very contemporary while still retaining the essence of the original. I think that’s amazing. Vishalbhai is a deadly combination of crystal clarity and pure passion.
Tell us about Kesu Firangi
He’s a very fascinating character. He’s like a very interesting combination of a fearless tiger who’d just get into action and rip off someone if he feels that someone he cares for is threatened. He’s fearless but vulnerable too at the same time. He breaks from within if someone he loves hurts him. Although he’s a political mafia, he’s a university graduate and is educated, sophisticated and polished. He converses in the local dialect but can suddenly break into English with an American twang. He loves to serenade beautiful women. Women are crazy about him. There’s Billo with whom he shares a very cute relationship. She’s very different from the other women he comes across. So she’s very special to him. She’s aware of the fact that he’s a big flirt. She gets angry with him but melts when she’s in his arms (smiles).
Kesu sounds very much like the real life Viveik Oberoi!
(Laughs) Kesu is a complete charmer, a flirt and can joke with women. I only joke with girls I know. I’m a very shy person.
Like Kesu, is there a tiger within you too?
(A bit of thought) I’m not an aggressive guy. People who’ve known me for long know that I’m very chilled out. My friends call me ‘rock star’ because of my chilled out attitude. It takes a lot to get me worked up but if someone riles me then there’s an explosion. I’m scared of what I’ll do when I’m angry so I steer clear of it and try not to get provoked. I’m scared of myself when I’m angry.
Having said that, do you feel you’re more convincing as the angry young man than the romantic guy on screen?
(A bit of thought) That’s an interesting question but I don’t look as an actor being cut out for a particular role. A good actor moulds himself according to the character. Whenever a role is offered to me, I think, ‘can I play him like this, can I do a different take on him and give him a different interpretation.’ Then I play the character and leave my stamp on it.
Would you consider Kesu as the most challenging role in your career, so far?
I’m not a regressive guy. I never really look back. Once I’ve finished shooting for a film, the film is done for me. It’s up there for people to see and judge. I don’t even look at the monitor while I’m shooting. While shooting for Omkara, I kept telling Vishalbhai if he was okay with what I was doing. I think I’m the only actor in the film who hasn’t watched the rushes of the film. I’ll watch the entire film.
Aren’t you worried about your look or body language in the film?
I leave it entirely to the director. If he’s happy then that’s the biggest reward for me. I also believe that a film is the director’s medium and he will judge if things are going as per his plans or not. When I was playing Kesu, I knew I was in character. I could feel it. If the director hadn’t been satisfied, he’d have told me.
But this sounds fine with an accomplished director. How about a new director?
I perform for the director as per his expectations. That’s why I’m different in every film. I go with the director’s sensibility. I try to mould myself according to his requirements. Some actors are like vessels, I believe in being the water that takes the shape of the vessel.
Does this blind faith work for you all the time?
Whether it does or not, I’m that way. I won’t change. Individually I can’t step out of the character I’m playing and become an observer. There’s somebody to watch me and it’s a person I trust.
This is a complete contrast to your so called ‘interfering’ image at one time!
(A bit of thought) If I were the interfering sort, I wouldn’t be where I am today (smiles). I’m completely a director’s actor. I only check out the monitor during a shoot if the director or choreographer wants to point out a mistake to me and wants me to rectify it.
A little about your other release, NAKSHA
It’s too early to talk about it but I’m playing a very interesting character, diametrically opposite to Kesu Firangi. The director, Sachin Bajaj, has been a good friend of mine for years. Our fathers have been friends for 30 years. So when Sachin decided to make a film, he had no option. I had to be in it (laughs). There have been no corners cut in its making and I hope for Sachin’s sake that the film is a huge success. It’s nothing I’ve done before.
July and August seem to be crucial months for you!
If it won’t kill me, it’s alright. I’m not scared of anything (smiles).

Vivek Oberoi’s tough moments in 'Omkara'
28th July 2006 16.20 IST
By Nikhil Kumar
Although Vivek Oberoi cherished the entire shooting schedule of Omkara , there are two sequences in the film he found challenging.
The first one is when he teaches Kareena Kapoor an English song by singing and playing a guitar himself. Vivek, who had never sung or played the guitar before, learned to sing and play the instrument for this scene in the film as the movie’s director Vishal Bhardwaj wanted to record the scene in sync sound (without any studio dubbing).
A music teacher was appointed for Vivek and he began practicing the chords on the guitar until he cut the tips of his fingers. It was then Saif Ali Khan , who is very good at the instrument, suggested him to practice more and gave him tips on how to place fingers on the fret board. So, after much practice, the tips of Vivek’s fingers became hard and callous and the chord sounds were clearer.
The said scene in the film has Kareena asking Vivek to teach her an English song so that she can sing it to her lover Omkara ( Ajay Devgan ). Vivek teaches her the famous Stevie Wonder song “I Just Called To Say I Love You”.
Another tough sequence for Vivek was when he was shooting on a giant wheel with Bipasha Basu . It happened that Bipasha got so nervous when the wheel began to turn at pace that even Vivek got scared, not for himself, but for her. Vivek says he was a bit amused to see the fearful side of Bipasha. And when Bipasha at last managed to pull the scene off, it left Vivek pretty impressed.

Viveik Oberoi: I am a very emotional person!
Indiatimes
What convinced you to play the role of Kesu in Omkara?
“Kesu is a very interesting and dynamic character with a lot of energy. He’s this charming character whom all the girls make a beeline for. He plays the guitar. He’s called a phirangi because he is the only one who can speak English in the village, and he speaks with a twang. He’s a total villager and speaks the local language and then suddenly changes to English. He’s very
cool, but fierce as a lion when it comes to fighting. He knows no fear. He’s a loyalist.”
You literally lived your role in your debut ‘Company’. Have you delved as deep into your character in any film since?
“I’ve kind of lived all the roles that I’ve played. It’s just that some have been more difficult for me. When the role is not intense, when the ambiance of the film is not very serious, you don’t really have to get that deep into it. In the case of Kesu, he is very real - he can abuse on the one hand and transform into a smooth talker the next moment. You have to change with the character.”
Did you find the real Viveik relating to Kesu in any way?
“Kesu is this charmer who eyes all the girls, but his heart lies with Billu (played by Bipasha Basu). She too likes him and she wants to believe that he can be her’s alone, but she is wise enough to know that that is not possible. She knows him too well. Kesu is an emotional person like me. I am a very emotional person too, but I am very committed unlike him.”
We hear you weren’t keen to play the role initially? Why?
“When I read Othello, I didn’t much of Cassio’s role. When Vishal Bhardwaj called me and asked me whether I wanted to do it, I told him that I would rather work with him on something else, because Cassio was a one dimensional role. Vishal told me to hear out his version of the role, and I was impressed by the way he had shaped it.”
Ajay and you are becoming quite a jodi on screen after doing so many films.
“I’ve worked with Ajay before and this is my fifth film with him. He’s a gem of a person and my calendar year is not complete without a film with him. In four years I have done five films with him so far.”
Hollywood actors give preference to strong characters rather than lead roles. Is it the same with you?
I the concept of leads to a large extent is passe. A film does not belong to one individual...it's a mish mash of different characters.
Working in a film produced by Kumar Mangat and starring Ajay, were you skeptical whether your role would shape out the way it was related to you, considering Mangat is Ajay?s right hand man?
No, I am not that kind of person. For instance I was doing a fight sequence, and Ajay was watching the scene. And Kumar Mangat, who is his right hand, was also there. I am supposed to protect Omi bhaiyya, the lead character, from enemies. And I went up to Ajay and told him that I wasn't sure how to do the scene, and asked him to help me out. He immediately went all out to design the entire fight sequence for me along with the action director. And I kept going up to Ajay and asking him if I was doing it right. Ajay is an amazing action star.

Vivek Oberoi rocks in Vishal Bhardwaj's OMKARA
Reminiscent of yore during his COMPANY days, Vivek has again showcased his perfectionist zeal and acting integrity, and has delivered a mind-blowing performance as 'Kesu Phirangi' in the cult film OMKARA. Vivek as 'Kesu Phirangi' is a youth icon, he rides a bullet, loves to dress up, is a compulsive flirt and since, is the only guy who speaks English and hence is known as 'Kesu Phirangi'. OMKARA is a film that defies conventional rules of commercial cinema and has a great all round performance by the cast.
Vivek has played nuances of his character with great intellect that Gulzaar Saab, after seeing his performance congratulated him. Infact Vivek has been getting a lot of calls from the industry and complimenting him for his performance and only wishing that they could have seen more of his energetic, lovable and dynamic character in the film. His mannerism and behavioral aspect of his character as a Bahubali (strongman) caught in an egoistical crossfire is so believable that you can almost feel his helplessness. And his full gusto performance in the 'Beedi' song, takes your breath away just by his acting and dancing prowess.
Vivek's back again as 'Kesu Phirangi' truly rocks!

Vivek Oberoi says co-star Bipasha Basu is terrified of heights
Mumbai, Aug 2 (AP):
http://www.hindu.com/thehindu/holnus/009200608021540.htm
Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi found out Bollywood beauty Bipasha Basu was scared of heights when they shot a scene in a Ferris wheel for a recently released movie.
Oberoi told the weekly film newspaper Screen that Basu was a wreck as the Ferris wheel turned, but she managed to make it through the shoot for ``Omkara'' without anyone but him realizing how scared she was.
Basu and Oberoi are among the stars of ``Omkara,'' which is based on Shakespeare's ``Othello.''
Basu's fear of heights apparently took him by surprise during the film shoot.
As the wheel took them skyward, Oberoi said Basu grabbed hold of his hand and squeezed her eyes shut. ``She confessed that she was petrified of heights and ordered me to close my eyes too,'' he was quoted as saying.
Oberoi said he was torn between feeling sorry for her and fighting the urge to laugh while assuring her that they would both be fine.
``She was such a wreck by the time we made it all the way up that I was convinced she'd never be able to pull off the scene we were to shoot. But I admire the girl's guts,'' he reportedly said. ``She conquered her fears and sailed through the moment without so much of a tremor.''
Is Vivek Oberoi dating an Australian?
http://www.apunkachoice.com/scoop/bollywood/20060807-5.html
Rumours are abuzz that Vivek Oberoi has found love once again.
The smile is back on Vivek Oberoi’s face. After his break-off from Aishwarya Rai early this year, the actor has been keeping a low profile until recently when he again began interacting with media and started making public appearances with a newfound exuberance.
The tinsel tattle suggests the actor has been seeing an Australian woman for quite some time now.
Vivek was reportedly spotted with this mystery woman at a suburban hotel. She even accompanied him to the press conference of Omkara . However, Vivek made sure to keep her away from the lenses of the paparazzi and quietly escorted her to a suite that had been booked for the movie’s star cast.
Sources say Vivek got introduced to this Australian beauty – her name still not known – at a party thrown by director Sachin Bajaj at Jazz By The Bay. As the two got talking at the party, they found many common interests – music and movies – and Vivek apparently did leave some impression on the pretty damsel from Down Under.
In fact, gossips go on to say that she has visited Vivek’s Juhu bungalow.
Vivek and his mystery woman have also been spotted together at several restaurants.
When asked about his new affair, Vivek refuses to give a clear-cut answer. But then, he never publicly admitted his affair with Ash when he was dating her.

The actor plays Good Samaritan by rushing an injured stuntman to the hospital
As Maya Dolas in Apoorva Lakhia's Shootout at Lokhandwala, Vivek Oberoi plays the dreaded gangster. But while shooting the film at Filmcity, one of the stuntmen, Amin, met with an accident. Realising the seriousness of the situation, Vivek jumped into action and rushed to the stuntman’s rescue.
The stunt was a difficult one and needed Amin to jump from the third floor of a building onto a Maruti van, which was meant to explode. While executing the stunt, Amin slipped and fell to the ground resulting in a nasty cut on his head, as he landed on glass.
“We were shooting a scene where Vivek Oberoi (Maya Dolas) threatens to push a man from the top. Everything was functioning smoothly and security measures were taken care of,” says a source on the sets. “However, when the stunt man fell down, he hurt his head. He was bleeding profusely and although conscious, he was scared. He was immediately given first-aid and a doctor was called. And considering his condition, Vivek volunteered to take him to Mamta hospital in Goregaon, as he knows some doctors there. The last we've heard about Amin is that he's stable.”
When contacted, Ejaz, the fight master for the sequence says, “Amin did meet with a small accident. It's ironic that he escaped unhurt when he jumped from the third floor but met with an accident when he slipped from the Maruti van where he was supposed to land. He was immediately taken to the hospital. He has been discharged and is now at home. The X-Rays indicated cuts and thankfully, nothing serious. Small bruises and cuts are a part of a stuntmen's life and if you notice even I have over 100 cuts on my body.”
Shootout At Lokhandwala is based on the 1991 shootout when the then cop A A Khan encountered and killed Maya Dolas and other gangsters in a building in Lokhandwala.

Ajay - Vivek make it 5 in a row
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, August 19, 2006]
http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/24614.html
Ajay Devgan and Vivek Oberoi are just 1 film away from hitting a sixer. Reason? Each of the 5 films that they have done together had been successful [though to a varying degree] at the box office.
Whether it was a underworld face/off in 'Company', a chicken'n'bull chase in 'Masti', call of the youth in 'Yuva', battle with the unknown in 'Kaal' or most recently a saga of misunderstandings'n'mayhem in 'Omkara', this male 'jodi' had always managed to do well together. Though there is no new film that the two have signed together, it would not be a bad option at all for the film makers to start treating this as a most reliable 'jodi' with a cent-percent record and feature the two in more films!

Celebrity spotting
Look who was at Prive last Friday living la vida loca! After making an impressionable entrance with a wingman/body guard, he flashed a naughty smile, instantly charming a sort-of starlet across the bar. After a quick introduction, she was whisked off to the dance floor — faster than you can say Viveik (boy-oh-boy) Oberoi — for a close encounter of the filmy kind. For a fraternity that's often super-stressed about their public image it's kind of cute to see one who's just enjoying his success with reckless abandon.
Sunny, Viveik and Sameera rock the dance floor
By IndiaFM News Bureau, August 25, 2006 - 06:07 IST
The combination of music director Pritam and singer Sonu Nigam has always given us some really rocking numbers. Be it Ada from Garam Masala or Halka Halka from Chocolate, their association creates music history and this time too, they have created a rocking track.
This promotional song from the movie Naksha looks awesome to the core. Picturized on Sunny Deol, Viveik Oberoi and Sameera Reddy, they shake their hips to You and I with élan. And this time Sunny Deol doesn't look out of place in a dance number (check him out in the midst of 20 young lasses).
As for Viveik and Sameera, it's just one big party for them. With so much energy oozing out from the pair, this video is sure to rock the charts.
Check this video out if you are in a mood to groove.

Viveik Oberoi in a pub brawl!
After Hours Correspondent
Thursday, August 31, 2006 00:30 IST
Viveik Oberoi is definitely living up his new found single status. He is often seen mingling with pretty young things at local pubs. But a few days ago, what started out as a regular, fun evening at a plush South Mumbai club turned ugly. Viveik approached a young girl Nisha (name changed on request) for a dance. Nisha, who was ‘drunk’ was more than flattered by the offer, burning the dance floor with him till the wee hours of the night.
However, the club’s guests were alarmed when suddenly Viveik and Nisha’s friend started arguing loudly. When asked about it, the friend (under the request of anonymity) said, “I saw Nisha leaving the club with Viveik. I was worried for her, so I asked Nisha if she was okay. This upset Viveik who insisted on dropping her home. We started arguing and finally Viveik left the club with Nisha and I stayed back.”
On her part Nisha said, “I don’t know what my friend’s problem was. Viveik offered to drop me home and then my friend came and created a ruckus. She obviously was looking for some attention from Viveik.” While Viveik was unavailable for comment, a close friend claimed, “Viveik was worried for Nisha as she was not feeling well. Her friend stormed off after the fight, so Viveik offered to drop her home like any decent man would. That’s all.”
The last year did not turn out as planned for Vivek Oberoi, on the professional and the personal front (his films flopped and his girlfriend Aishwarya Rai walked out on him). Dejected but not out, he has now returned with a bang. Not only has he moved on after Aishwarya, (he is dating an Australian woman currently), but his career is looking up too. His performance in Vishal Bharadwaj's Omkara is a case in point. Today, as he blows out the candles on his 30th birthday, the actor is clear about the fact that he wants to move on in life.
He will celebrate his birthday with his family and all the children of an orphanage. Like every year, the day will begin with a hawan performed by his parents Yashodhara and Suresh Oberoi at their Juhu bungalow. "After that he will visit the orphanage near his house and spend the day with the kids there. He is very fond of them. He will cut a cake and distributes goodies among them," says a very close friend of Vivek.
"Every year I celebrate my birthday with these kids... This year will be much the same," says Vivek. The actor has also organised a special screening of Golmaal for the kids and will be watching the film with them at a suburban theatre. "We will be hosting a rocking party for Vivek later at night," reveals his friend.
Celebrating his birthday, however, does not mean taking a day off. The actor is busy promoting his forthcoming venture Naksha and is equally excited about his role in Shootout At Lokhandwala (he plays Maya Dolas' character). Here is wishing Vivek a very happy birthday!

Some dudes have all the luck. Recently, Viveik Oberoi celebrated his birthday (September 3) twice.
One, on Saturday when his good friend and director Sachin Bajaj brought it in at an Italian restaurant, and then by his close friend and publicity manager, who sprung a surprise party for him at Aziaano. In attendance were Akshay Kumar, Upen Patel, Tusshar Kapoor and Shabbir Ahluwalia, among others.
High spirits
Says Akshay Bajaj, the producer of Naksha, “Viveik and Sachin are very close friends. So after the press conference on Saturday night, Sachin, Sameera Reddy and Milap Jhaveri (one of the writers) dragged Viveik to Don Giovanni at Juhu, where they brought his birthday in.”
The second party was a surprise party, and Viveik had no idea about it till he reached the venue.
He was led to believe that a few friends were heading out for drinks, but when he reached the new hotspot at Phoenix Mills, he found 15-20 of his close friends there. There were many rounds of tequila shots and champagne flowing till the wee hours of morning.

'I play a mad, spoilt brat'
September 8, 2006, rediff.com
Vivek Oberoi is in a fun mood. His Naksha opens today, and he's currently working on a film called Shootout At Lokhandwala. After that, the actor plans to go bike on the highest motor-able passes from Delhi via the Rohtang pass to Leh-Ladakh, and back.
That's not all. He informs Priyanka Jain that he's also planning to go deep-sea diving, and wonders if she can come along. When she looks puzzled, he breaks into a grin. "I need something to feed the sharks."
What does the actor tell her about his first action-adventure film? Lets find out.
Naksha is your first adventure film. Were you afraid of working with a debutant director?
The director Sachin Bajaj is a friend. He weighs about 130 kilos and threatened to sit on me if I didn't sign the film. On a serious note, when Sachin narrated the adventure story to me, I was impressed with the vision he had. It has been a long time since an adventure film was made. Sachin has worked as an assistant director for about seven years and I had complete faith in him.
Instead of importing a foreign action-adventure film, they came up with their own plot involving Indian mythology. The story is very natural and real -- a story about India.
What is your role in the film?
I play Vicky, the son of an archaeologist who died holding a secret when the boy was just 5. Vicky is a mad, spoilt brat and a prankster with a lot of attitude. He loves to mess around with people. He has cocky comments to make even when there is a gun held to his head.
On the other hand, he is a sweet guy with a golden heart who loves his mother. He wants to unravel the mystery at the end of which lies his fathers dream. When he disappears, his mother sends his stepbrother Vir (Sunny Deol) to bring him back.
How was it working with Sunny?
Sunny is my ideal action hero. I call him Sunny bhaiya out of love and respect. We have a Punjabi connection. When we were shooting at the Rohtang pass, we found a dhaba that served thick aloo parathas. He would say that when you are Punjabi, all you eat is protein; there is no concept of fat. The friendship and admiration I have for him can be seen in the film as well.
Apparently, you didn't spare Sameera Reddy during the shoot. She has been complaining about your pranks.
(innocently) Do you think I can ever play a prank on anybody?
We know each other from the time we were both at Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting classes. Sameera is a heroic woman in the film. She did a lot of stunts actresses would normally shy away from. In one scene, we were standing on the edge of a 400-foot cliff, ready to jump. As she was looking down and trying to calm her nerves, I said, "I am so proud of you. How deep do you think it is? About 400-500 feet? What if one falls down from here? What if the cable breaks? Is your harness tight?' I would then throw a stone and watch it rolling down. She would get really irritated (laughs).
Talking of stunts, what were the highlights and difficulties?
The director had hired technical experts and we had action director Alan Amin to guide us. Apart from that, Sunny and I have done a lot of adventure activities in the past, so there wasn't much of a problem. In New Zealand, we shot a river rafting sequence that locals warned could be fatal. But, with Alan around, we were confident. No one goes river rafting without helmets. Even the experts with us wore helmets but, due to continuity issues, we had to do the scene without headgear. When you see these scenes, you can't help but admire the work of cameraman Vijay Arora. The temperature of the water was below two degrees. It was freezing, and Sunny challenged me to get into the water. I challenged him back and we both ended up in the water with our teeth chattering.
There is one stunt where I am trying to escape from people who are chasing me. A bullock cart gets in the way and I slip between the two wheels to get out at the other side. While doing the scene, I almost missed having the wheel run over my neck.
Considering you have been very accident prone in the past, did the action scenes worry you?
There was a phase in my life when a lot of 'accidents' happened. Luckily, that phase is over. I had 11 accidents in 8 months! It's thanks to the blessings and prayers of my family, fans and friends that I am over with all that. Now, when accidents happen, I take care of people.
Nothing happened during the Naksha shoot. I didn't get hurt even once, despite the stunts and action scenes. As I have had so many accidents in the past, action directors have become more cautious. They now double and triple check before shooting.

Something brewing between Vivek Oberoi and Sushma Reddy!
11th Sept 2006 17.15 IST
By ApunKaChoice
Rumours from the tinsel town suggest that something is indeed brewing between actor Vivek Oberoi and Sushma Reddy .
Of late, Vivek and Sushma have been spotted together on many occasions. The last one was perhaps a few days back at the screening of Vivek’s latest movie Naksha at Cinemax in Andheri.
Just a day before this screening, Vivek had celebrated his birthday at a low-key gathering with his ‘Naksha’ co-star Sameera Reddy (Sushma’s younger sister) and the film’s crew. Although Sushma was invited to this party, she couldn’t make it for some reason.
So, according to the reports, Vivek personally talked to Sushma on the phone and invited her to the screening of ‘Naksha’ the next day, where he had also invited some little children.
Because she shares many “common interests” with Vivek, Sushma made it to Cinemax Andheri the next day.
Moreover, Sushma’s sister Sameera is being seen as the matchmaker between the two. Vivek and Sameera have already become good friends since working together in ‘Naksha’.
Sushma, on the other hand, is quoted as saying that she likes Vivek a lot. But she shies a notch short of saying that there is something romantic between them.

Vivek promotes healthy eating habits
IndiaGlitz [Monday, September 11, 2006]
Viveik Oberoi launched 'Rasha Road To Nutrition', an educational book for his 4 year old fan named Rasha who belongs to Chandigarh. The event was held at Granth book store, Juhu, Mumbai on September 8th.
The book is a series of 5 books containing stories about healthy eating habits for children and is a Euro books publication. These books have been introduced with the intention to encourage kids to eat healthy and nutritious food. This has been done in a very practical manner where they meet various characters along with the principal characters, Rasha and Olive- The Doll.
Says Vivek, "It's an interesting and a fun way of teaching the kids. It will make it easier for mothers to teach their children to eat nutritional and healthy food."
Huge fan following that Vivek has amongst children was quite evident as the young ones were all ears when Vivek recited to them a small paragraph. His presence had the little kids really excited. Few of the lucky one's got to sit with him as he read out the paragraph to them.
Shalini Sharma, mother of Rasha, who conceptualized the book along with her illustrator & interior designer friend Shehnaz David said, "Rasha was feeling completely out of this world when Vivek consented and launched the book. She is Vivek's biggest fan. It was a dream come true for her!"
She added "The books have been written keeping in mind the various food groups which constitute a balanced diet. Moreover, the message of healthy eating is brought out in the form of endearing stories, rhyming verses and songs. Colorful and attractive illustrations help the child to understand the stories better."
Kids were dressed up as fruits and vegetables and added flavor to the evening. The kids also gathered around Vivek posing for photographs and his autographs. Vivek really seemed to enjoy and had more fun than the kids!!

Aditya Lakhia, Rohit Roy, Viveik Oberoi, Aarti Chabria, Tusshar Kapoor, Shabbir Ahluwalia doing the snake dance in the prank scene while Sanjay Gupta plays cameraman
Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta and director Apoorva Lakhia decided to play a prank on their stars, Viveik Oberoi, Tusshar Kapoor, Shabbir Ahluwalia, Rohit Roy, Aarti Chabria and Aditya Lakhia, during the shooting
of Shootout At Lokhandwala at Filmistan Studios.
Says Lakhia, “Sanjay (Gupta) and I decided to play a prank on all these guys in the morning. We were to shoot a song Teri Dhun sung by Rahat
Fateh Ali Khan and choreographed by Rajeev Goswami that day and we thought, ‘why not have some fun?’ Before beginning the shoot for the song, we told everyone except the cast about the prank.”
Whipping boys
Adds Gupta, “We told Aarti Chabria to stand on a chair with a whip in her hands. And every time she cracked the whip and it touched one of the boys, he would have to fall on the ground and writhe like a snake! And they all did that very sincerely; not knowing the scene would never make it to the film. It was sight to see all these boys writhing on the floor.” Till the time when the unit couldn’t keep a straight face any longer and cracked up laughing.
Just a prank
Says Tusshar, “We were shooting very normally, then suddenly Gups (Gupta) made Aarti stand on a height with us all surrounding her and making her whip us. Each time she whipped one of us, we would have to tremble, fall down crawling and writhing on the floor! And then they told us it’s just for making of a prank. The song called Mein teri dhun mein, the song was like rocking scene when Gups suddenly comes and tells us ‘we were making an ass of you all!’ Imagine!”
Though Rohit, Shabbir and Viveik maintain the ‘we knew all along that it was a prank” Gupta and Lakhia maintain they were in the dark. There is good-humoured ribbing all around. Shabbir has the last word, “The song is too cool man! We have all requested Gups and Apu to keep it in the film and not dispense with it. We had a blast shooting for it and we will not do away with it. It has to be kept now!”
About Shootout At Lokhandwala
Produced by Whitefeather Films, Shootout At Lokhandwala, is a true life story that had taken place in 1991, in the bustling Lokhandwala Complex where five criminals had been gunned down along with their accomplices.
They were counting 70 lakhs in Flat no. 32 B, when 286 policemen, headed by ACP Khan, took strategic positions around their building. A gunfire ensued and the entire nation witnessed the most talked about daylight encounter lasting six hours. Viveik and Tusshar play gangsters Maya Dolas and Dilip Buwa respectively. Dolas and Buwa made extortion the buzzword in the early 90s.

His role in NAKSHA, may not have found the desired appeal with Sunny Deol holding center stage but Viveik Oberoi's performance in SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA, will be something to watch out for according to director, Apoorva Lakhia. The film is based on a series of events that happened in 1991 when gangster, Maya Dolas had spread a reign of terror. Viveik's character is loosely inspired by Maya Dolas' character and Lakhia specially chose him to play the role after seeing his performance in COMPANY. "The role is tailor-made for him and his was the first name that came to my mind when I started casting for the film. He was fantastic in both COMPANY and SAATHIYA, two of his films that I had seen before," Apoorva reveals.
He is all praise for Viveik's performance in the film. "He is an intense performer but I think his performance in my film is just above the ordinary. Moreover, Viveik is an involved actor, who takes his role to a very different level," Apoorva adds. According to him, Viveik has had a rough patch in his career like most other actors do, but he feels that Viveik has a great future ahead.

Naksha celebrates 50 days
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Thursday, October 19, 2006]
http://img.indiaglitz.com/hindi/news/Naksha191006_1.jpg
Sachin Bajaj's debut action adventure flick 'Naksha' has completed 50 days at the box office.
This well made film was released a week after 'Lage Raho Munnabhai' and trade believes that if only there would have been a gap between the two flicks, 'Naksha' would have done a much better business than it has eventually done. The film has done reasonably well but has been termed as a non-success due to its heavy budget.
Also the low phase of both Sunny and Viveik also impacted its eventual total, though one needs to admit that it was Sunny's star power at number of centers that made it generate decent revenue there. In addition, since the film was more in the running at the single screens rather than the multiplexes, the total doesn't truly reflect the decent crowd it got in.
Nevertheless, in the world where box office success is the obvious parameter of a film's popularity, 'Naksha' may well go down as an also-ran, though one wishes that Sunny and Viveik truly make a worthy comeback soon!

Vivek avoided Salman?
by Debasis Jana
http://www.indiatarget.com/cgi-bin/detailnews.cgi?id=3714
Vivek Oberoi was scheduled to attend a private screening of Salman-Akshay starrer ‘Jaanemann', but he didn't make it, which had raised eyebrows of many.
As per source, Vivek is not feeling well these days; he has been suffering from light cold and cough. And that's why he had to cancel it at the last moment.
However as per industry grapevine, Vivek, still bears Salman-phobia in his sub-conscious mind, just avoided the event so as he doesn't have to rub shoulders with his once-declared foe, Salman.

Film on mental illness planned
Special Correspondent
Link: http://www.hindu.com/2006/10/26/stories/2006102605690200.htm
It will not be mushy or gloomy, but hard-hitting, says filmmaker Sarika
REACHING OUT: (From left) Ms. Afghanistan Vida Sam Samadzai, actor Sarika, Vandana of `Banyan,' actors Vivek Oberoi and Revati at the media conference in Chennai. - Photo: K. Pichumani
CHENNAI: Actor Sarika is ready with a script for a full-length feature film. Surviving mental illness will be the theme and The Banyan, a non-governmental organisation looking after the care and rehabilitation of mentally ill destitute women, will form the backdrop.
The script is based on a case study that she zeroed in at The Banyan.
Sarika has been associated with The Banyan for sometime now and feels the cause would be best served through a feature film.
"More focus"
The resulting visibility would mean a lot more focus on the issue, she said. "If you do it correctly, film is a good medium to bring the issue to centre stage."
She said part of the finances are ready and Vandana Gopikumar and Vaishnavi Jayakumar, founder trustees of The Banyan, are confident that the remaining money could be arranged over the next few months before the shooting begins.
No word on the cast
Sarika chose not to reveal the star cast and is of the opinion that actors should feel for the cause if they want to be part of the project.
"Someone [an artiste] should not say, `I charge Rs. five lakh, but for this I will do it for Rs. one lakh... Their commitment should not end with that," she said and added that she was looking for stars who would also be sensitive to the nature of the subject.
Sarika spoke with passion about the film: "It will not be mushy or gloomy. It will be hard-hitting. Yes, it will be ugly in parts. We are not going to run away from the ugliness."
There was another visitor at The Banyan on Tuesday: Vida Samadzai.
She said she felt very strongly on women's rights issues, a fact that is reflected in her website.
"I migrated from Afghanistan after being brought up through some very trying times. The world through my eyes growing up has been a world where women's rights were suppressed and their very basic human rights have been constantly violated.
"As an Afghan woman, I look at this problem not as religious fanaticism, but the supremacy of ignorance and lack of tolerance," says a note posted by her at her website, www.vidasamadzai.com.
How it happened
It was Vivek Oberoi who put her, a former Miss Afganisthan, in touch with The Banyan. Vida is now in Mumbai for work and Oberoi, explained to her the work at The Banyan and put her on to its founder trustees.
"She wanted to come and visit the place," says Oberoi. "And here she is."
Vida said she had come to Chennai earlier with Salman Khan and others for an AIDS awareness programme.
"I have been involved in many causes and mental illness is one of them," she says.
She would help out in the little ways that she could and also spread the message on mental illness, she added.

Banyan residents recall success stories of overcoming mental illness
Special Correspondent

Mental health issues are a `dark area of Indian policy'
IMPRESSIVE GATHERING: Film director Maniratnam, former Miss Afghanistan Vida Samadzai, U.S. Consul General David T. Hopper, actor Vivek Oberoi, ICICI deputy director Nachiket Mor and Additional Advocate General Bharatram listening to a Banyan residen t at the inauguration of The Banyan Centre in Chennai. — Photo: K. V. Srinivasan
CHENNAI: A few residents of The Banyan, a non-governmental organisation working with mentally ill destitute women, on Wednesday spoke about their experience of conquering their illness, at the inauguration of the Banyan Centre here.
"Anyone can become mentally ill," said Jessi Janaki, a primary school teacher, who has been under treatment for about nine years. "Just like me, everyone can fight it and have a better life," she added
Anuradha, another recovered resident who worked in the vocational training centre, said that she now had a bank account and the centre got enough orders to manage on its own.
These and several other success stories were recounted at The Banyan Centre here which houses a vocational training unit, a growth laboratory, a working women's hostel, outpatient services, legal aid services, a networking cell and an awareness and advocacy cell.
Speaking at the inauguration, United States Consul General in South India, David T. Hopper, said that the United States government and non-governmental organisations contributed in a variety of ways to many causes that required urgent attention. The Indian-American community in the U.S. was growing and they too were helping out. "They are to be saluted for their generosity," he said.
Nachiket Mor, Deputy Director, ICICI, said The Banyan had two specific challenges: to raise the finances for catering to immediate needs such as medicine for residents and setting up an institute for training social change leaders who would tackle social problems, including providing care for the huge numbers of mentally ill in the country.
N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu , said the real challenge for an organisation such as the Banyan was scaling up and extension of its operations. "The next stage will be the most difficult and challenging," he said and described mental health issues as a "dark area of Indian policy."
Vida Samadzai, former Miss Afghanistan, said that the world required to be aware of the facts of mental illness and everyone should do their bit to remove the stigma associated with it.
Bharatram, Banyan Trustee and Additional Advocate-General, narrating a story of a young girl throwing back shells into the sea, said that though the problem was huge, one could make a difference with small groups of people.
Film director Maniratnam said that every time he came to The Banyan, he was humbled by what he saw. Now, the organisation was being taken "several notches above."
Actor Revathi talked about the growth of the organisation and said that people came to expect much more from The Banyan.
Actor Vivek Oberoi said that the organisation set daunting targets for itself each year and achieved these. Madhuri Menon, Trustee, said that for her, the past 10 years had been a learning and growing experience. The organisation's greatest strength was the people who worked with the mentally ill residents.
Lakshmi Ravikanth, Trustee, said that only when the recovered were gainfully occupied did they realise their self worth.
The Banyan's growth lab was an initiative towards that end.

Vivek Oberoi has been signed up opposite Kareena Kapoor for director Vikram Bhatt's next, to be produced by Anubhav Sinha and Anish Ranjan under the banner of Seven Entertainment.
Vivek and Kareena earlier worked together in Mani Ratnam's film ‘Yuva'. And Vikram's this film would be their second film together.
As per reports, the yet-to-title film will go on floor in February next year. And besides Kareena and Vivek, there will be another romantic pair; however the stars for the leads have not been finalized yet.
Vivek's last film ‘Pyare Mohan' has bit the dust, and so Vikram's last directorial venture, ‘Ankahee'. Both need a hit. Let's see whether this film can give them a break.

If you are desperate enough to be wondering where Vivek Oberoi has disappeared, then there is a piece of information to be shared. He is busy preparing for his annual 10-day pilgrimage to Sabarimalai. He's wrapped up ‘Shootout At Lokhandwala' and ‘Fool N Final' and has no other films in his kitty. Apparently, he will walk 55 kilometers. So when he has no work, he has miles to walk, for sure. Poor guy, Ash has gone earlier from his life, now work.

Vivek Oberoi drives James Bond car in Fool and Final
By IndiaFM News Bureau, January 19, 2007 - 10:50 IST
http://www.indiafm.com/news/2007/01/19/8683/
Vivek Oberoi is rearing to go in the world’s costliest car Aston Martin DBS. He will be the first Indian actor to shoot with the car after Daniel Craig of the James bond film Casino Royale. The car will be used for a song sequence in Dubai. Director Ahmed Khan and producer Feroz Nadiadwala have specially called for this car from New York for the shoot.
According to Ahmed Khan, the hiring cost for the car is about $178400 and this royal car will be hired for a week. The song used for the sequence will have a hard rock effect. Vivek plays a guy, who fixes boxing matches in the film. He will be seen driving various costly cars in the film. The interesting thing about the song according to Ahmed Khan is that Vivek will have the James Bond look
Ahmed further adds that the song has been sung by Himesh Reshammiya and Ahmed himself will choreograph the song.

Vivek Oberoi to drive James Bond car
20th Jan 2007 11.30 IST
By ApunKaChoice
http://www.apunkachoice.com/scoop/bollywood/20070120-0.html
No, Vivek Oberoi is not going to Hollywood. He will only drive the car that Agent 007 has been driving in a number of James Bond movies.
Bollywood producer Feroz Nadiadwala is letting loose his purse strings for a stylish song in his forthcoming movie Fool And Final in which Vivek plays a smart guy who fixes boxing matches.
One song in the movie shows Vivek driving a number of expensive cars, including Hummer and Porsche. But when Nadiadwala saw Daniel Craig drive the world's costliest car Aston Martin DBS in ‘Casino Royale’, he thought of hiring the car for the song.
The car will reportedly be brought for the song’s shooting in Dubai.
The film is being directed by Ahmed Khan who has choreographed the song as well. Set to Himesh Reshammiya ’s tune, the song is a hard rock number featuring Vivek in stylish outfits.
Aston Martin DBS has featured in a number of Bond movies, including ‘Goldfinger’, ‘Thunderball’, ‘Golden Eye’ and ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’.
It is estimated that hiring the car for even a few days would cost Nadiadwala a substantial sum of money.

Vivek Oberoi: Country Road Take me Home
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, January 30, 2007]
http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/28824.html
Vivek Oberoi may be maintaining a low profile but that hasn't stopped the industry from standing up for him. Lately there has been a spate of controversies surrounding Vivek. It started off with a rumour about Sunjay Dutt, his co star in ‘Shoot Out At Lokhandwala’ being upset with him over girlfriend Manyata.
Yet another story that did the rounds was that Vivek was on a depression mode post the engagement of Abhishek-Ash. And now recently, there's news of Salman Khan snubbing Vivek in Dubai.
Sources close to Vivek say, “These stories are being blown out of proportion just because the once media friendly Vivek is not accessible to anyone anymore. Since there is no access to him, people are adding two and two and coming up with twenty two.”
Even stories about Vivek going into depression post the Abhi-Ash engagement is being laughed off by the Dubai unit of Feroz Nadiadwala's ‘Fool And Final. Says a unit member, “We had a blast shooting with Vivek in Dubai. Vivek is very focused on his career. He was shooting non-stop and hitting the club in the night with all of us. The Abhi-Ash was bound to happen sooner or later. In fact, not once did we see him upset or depressed over it. He was the life of the set, making all of us laugh and making sure we had a blast.”
“Even reports about Salman ignoring Vivek in Dubai seems so incongruous.” He adds, “ We were shooting with him all the time and not once did Vivek approach Salman, nor did they ever cross paths, so the question of snubbing does not arise at all.”
In fact a director close to both of the actors says, “This story circulating about them is so amusing. They have both moved on with their lives and are busy with their respective careers.”
Vivek Oberoi is a talented actor with a tendency for regularly putting his foot in the mouth which often lands him in trouble. Hopefully he has learnt his lessons well and would from now on concentrate on enhancing his acting prowess rather than attempting to being the self proclaimed blue eyed boy of the media or a poodle to a superstar brand ambassador of beauty products at Cannes festival. Also he should refrain from being the butt-of-all-jokes at his film press conferences where he tries to sell his wares a bit too hard. And that atrocious sense of humour needs some massive trimming too. Not a tall order I guess. Or is it!

Industry stands up for Vivek Oberoi!
Bollywood Trade News Network
http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/07/feb/01_vivek_oberoi_sanjay_dutt_salman_khan_abhishek_a sh.asp
Vivek Oberoi may be maintaining a low profile but that hasn't stopped the industry from standing up for him. Lately there have been a spate of controversies surrounding Vivek. It started off with a rumour about Sanjay Dutt, his co star in SHOOT OUT AT LOKHANDWALA being upset with him over girlfriend Manyata. Yet another story that did the rounds was that Vivek was on a depression mode post the engagement of Abhishek-Ash. And now recently, there's news of Salman Khan snubbing Vivek in Dubai.
Sources close to Vivek laugh off all these rumours, "These stories are being blown out of proportion just because the once media friendly Vivek is not accessible to anyone anymore. Since there is no access to him, people are adding two and two and coming up with twenty two."
Vivek of course is unaffected by all this and continues to maintain a dignified silence. But that hasn't stopped his supporters from taking a stand. In fact, when the Manyata issue was blown out of proportion, Sanjay Dutt himself spoke to the media and clarified that Vivek was like a brother to him and all reports were false.
Even stories about Vivek going into depression post the Abhi-Ash engagement is being laughed off by the Dubai unit of Feroz Nadiadwala's FOOL AND FINAL. Says a unit member who is back from the hectic schedule, " We had a blast shooting with Vivek in Dubai. Vivek is very focused on his career. He was shooting non-stop and hitting the club in the night with all of us. The Abhi- Ash was bound to happen sooner or later. In fact, not once did we see him upset or depressed over it. He was the life of the set, making all of us laugh and making sure we had a blast."
"Even reports about Salman ignoring Vivek in Dubai seem so incongruous." he adds. " We were shooting with him all the time and not once did Vivek approach Salman, nor did they ever cross paths, so the question of snubbing does not arise at all."
In fact a director close to both of the actors says, " This story circulating about them is so amusing. They have both moved on with their lives and are busy with their respective careers."

There's buzz that actor Vivek Oberoi is dating with a TV actress, named Dimple Inamdar. They have been spotted together recently. After his break-up with Aishwarya Rai, Vivek has been maintaining a low profile for a while. Though Vivek isn't commenting, Dimple is more forthcoming. She says, “Vivek and I met at a party and got talking. A big deal was made out of nothing.”
So are they friend? “We have hardly met two or three times. We are very busy with our lives and work and don't even talk on the phone.” But Dimple admits that she spoke to Vivek after rumours of their link-up started doing rounds. “We both found it quite funny and laughed it off,” says Dimple, who has done TV show like ‘Remix', ‘Guns ‘n' Roses' etc.

Fool N Final set on fire
By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 9, 2007 - 06:14 IST
http://www.indiafm.com/news/2007/02/09/8848/
The set of Ahmed Khan’s Fool N Final is in ashes due to an alleged fire which burned down the entire set. The set was built for Shahid Kapoor’s song sequences in Filmistan. Says the film director Ahmed Khan, “The set caught fire yesterday in the morning and it must have been caused by a short circuit.” Equipment worth Rs70 lakhs has been completely destroyed because of the fire.
This is not the first time that this film’s set has caught fire. Earlier in January last year while shooting in Film City with Sunny Deol and Shahid Kapoor, the entire helipad had caught fire.
Fool N Final will be Ahmed Khan’s second directorial venture. The film has a huge starcast which includes Sunny Deol, Shahid Kapoor, Sunil Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu, Arbaaz Khan, Ayesha Takia and Sameera Reddy. The film is produced by Firoz Nadiadwala.

Bollywood fans will be able to witness critically and commercially acclaimed actor, Vivek Oberoi, perform for the very first time in the United States at this year’s Bollywood Awards Ceremony, to be held on May 26th 2007 at the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island.
Oberoi blazed onto the big screen with his realistic portrayal of a gangster in Ram Gopal Varma’s COMPANY. He quickly moved out of the shadow of his father, esteemed veteran actor, Suresh Oberoi, and climbed into the top echelon of Indian leading men. His unconventional good looks and million dollar smile make him very popular with the ladies and the actor was most recently linked with Bollywood beauty, Aishwarya Rai, before her engagement to Abhishek Bachchan.
Highly educated, Vivek studied at Mayo College in Ajmer and later in London where he was discovered; he later came to New York to study his craft. After proving his mettle in COMPANY, the big banners came his way and he played the lead in Yashraj Films’ SAATHIYA, Subhash Ghai’s KISNA and Mani Ratnam’s YUVA - to name a few. This year, he shined as part of ensemble cast in Vishal Bhardwaj’s OMKARA. Vivek’s support of charitable causes, particularly his mother’s trust, has made him an unofficial ambassador for philanthropy in India.
The Bollywood Group has brought many performers to their fans in the US for the very first time, and we are excited and proud to add Vivek Oberoi to that list,” said Rajiv Dandona, Vice President of the Bollywood Awards. “Vivek is a great dancer and is putting his heart and soul into his first performance to ensure that it will be most memorable for him, and for the fans.”
Bollywood fans will be able to see Vivek and Indian cinema’s other big stars up close and personal. The Bollywood Awards committee has announced the red carpet at the Bollywood Movie Awards to be held on May 26th 2007 at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island. The excitement will be palpable as the stars exit from their limos into the photographer and fan blitzkrieg.
The performers announced thus far for the Bollywood Awards this year include Akshay Kumar, Vivek Oberoi, Arjun Rampal, Kangana Ranaut, Raghav, Pakistan’s hottest actress and singer Shahida Mini. Also attending will be Hollywood’s Danny Glover, Phylicia Rashad, Anupam Kher, Suresh Oberoi, Upen Patel, Rajkumar Hirani, Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN, and a host of other celebrities will be announced as the show approaches.
Preparations are on the way to make this event a memorable night. No stone is left unturned to make the Bollywood Movie Awards a glamorous and historic event.

NEW DELHI (AP) _ U.S. fans of Indian actor Vivek Oberoi will get a chance to see the star dance at a Bollywood awards event in New York state in May, news reports said Monday.
Oberoi, who won critical acclaim for his role in the film "Omkara," will be dancing at the annual Bollywood awards function being held May 26 at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, the United News of India news agency said.
Singing and dancing are staples of India's exuberant, wildly popular Hindi-language films, which are made by the country's movie industry, often referred to as "Bollywood."
"Vivek is a great dancer and is putting his heart and soul into his first performance to ensure that it will be most memorable for him, and for the fans," the news report quoted Rajiv Dandona, one of the event's organizers, as saying.
Oberoi's convincing debut role as a gangster in the film "Company" was followed by a series of other hit films including the psycho-thriller "Road," "Saathiya" or "Companion," and "Omkara," based on Shakespeare's "Othello."
Others performing at the awards function will include Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal and Kangana Ranaut.

'Masti' prequel: Joys of bachelorhood
19th Feb 2007 16.39 IST
By Aparajita Ghosh
http://www.apunkachoice.com/scoop/bollywood/20070219-2.html
If Indra Kumar’s movie Masti was about the extra-marital misadventures of three married men, the movie’s prequel will be about joys of bachelorhood.
Yes, a prequel to the hit movie that starred Vivek Oberoi , Ritesh Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani as three henpecked husbands is in the planning stages.
The film’s prequel will not be directed by Indra Kumar , but by Tushar Hiranandani, the man who wrote ‘Masti’. The prequel will mark Hiranandani’s directorial debut.
The film will be about three bachelors and their love escapades. Hiranandani promises an entertaining blend of romance and comedy in the film.
It is still not clear whether Hiranandani plans to cast the same actors (Vivek, Ritesh and Aftab). But it is reliably learnt that the film will have three heroes and five heroines, most of them new faces.
The movie is in scripting stages and will go on the floors in November or December this year.

After Ash gone, it’s no-woman’s land for Vivek!
by Debasis Jana

After his break-up with actress Aishwarya Rai, Vivek Oberoi has totally gone out of starry sign. As per latest, he has lost his grandmother recently, whom he loved very much. The actor is presently in Varanasi , completing the funeral rituals; he will be back in the city soon and start working too. The actor was last seen on Valentine's night spending the evening with few of his friends, and no there were no females; they were all his male friends. It seems, even after so many days Ash separated from his life, the actor hasn't been able to get over the shock.

Abhishek-Aishwarya engaged: Vivek upset?

If the rumourmongers are to be believed, actor Vivek Oberoi is not happy with the news of his ex-girlfriend Aishwarya Rai got engaged to Abhishek Bachchan. As per rumours, Vivek is quite disappointed following Ash's engagement. Vivek, meanwhile, is busy shooting Ahmed Khan's film ‘Fool and Final' in Dubai . A unit member of this film says, “We had a blast shooting with Vivek in Dubai . He used to shoot non-stop and then hit the club circuit in the night with all of us. The Abhishek-Aishwarya engagement was bound to happen sooner or later. In fact not once did we see him upset or depressed over it.”

Vivek fell for Ash, but Ash initiated it!
by Debasis Jana
http://www.indiatarget.com/cgi-bin/detailnews.cgi?id=4451
Ash initiated it, and Ash finished it. Everybody knows, at the end point of Vivek-Aishwarya affair, how fed-up Aishwarya was with her then boyfriend and she was apparently suffocating in the relationship, however Vivek was cool and had in fact no issue with her. Seeing Aishwarya ignoring him, Vivek was quite shocked at that time and the poor guy hasn't got over it yet totally. Recounting his two-years-long relationship, Vivek claimed recently that it was Aishwarya who initiated the thing and he as a man couldn't ignore the world's most beautiful lady's call. “I've never had the guts to make the first move. In fact, my all relationships have always been initiated by the girl,” said Vivek recently with adding, “I am a very shy person. I'm tongue tied in front of a girl whom I find attractive.” So all the beautiful ladies should keep it in mind before wooing Vivek that he doesn't make the first move.
