A peacock spreads its mesmerizing wings underneath the scorching blue-Sky; vibrant puppets descend from the gnarled branches of an ancient tree; golden sands of an endless desert keep on swirling, and a beautiful folk tale from Rajasthan comes to life.
Summer releases are on their way and for sure, the industry is looking for major hits. A movie that is creating some curiosity is Paheli directed by Amol Palekar. What’s interesting with this film is that it doesn’t have the feel of a real, all-out commercial film, especially when stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Amitabh Bachchan, Juhi Chawla, and other well-known artists are involved.
Paheli is based on a legendary story “Duvidha” written by stalwart Vijaydan Detha. This writer added comtemporary dimensions in his story that stand monumental in Indian literature. Can this novel be a hit on the screen decades after it was written? If Devdas could, why can’t Paheli?
The story is simple, but the film will examine human as well as eternal relationships. A lovely young girl named Lachchi (Rani Mukherji) gets married, but her husband runs off on their wedding night because he is greedy to make money. Unknown to anyone, a ghost, Kishen, (Shah Rukh Khan) falls in love with her and takes on the husband’s appearance for years. Until one day . . . the husband returns to the village and there is confusion as to what’s going on. Can a woman choose between her husband that she does not know and a ghost who could provide the love she desires? That’s the riddle (Paheli) to be solved this June where Amitabh Bachchan plays a key in solving the mystery.
